Finding Balance

From the Power of Habit – Simply giving employees a sense of agency a feeling that they are in control,  that they have genuine decision making authority can radically increase how much energy and focus they bring to their jobs. Starbucks has seen turnover reduced and customer satisfaction go up, just by asking employees  for input on where the espresso machine should be or  how the cash registers should be laid  out in order to serve customers better.  People want to be in control of their lives.

But if you recall in Week 1 “Organizations thrive on routine” from Primal Leadership, how does this case in the Power of Habit change the way we see our role in motivating or helping employees to have some control without losing control or becoming a routine in the work place?

How would you or how have you as a leader, kept the routine of the job for safety or productivity reasons but still empowered your employees to have some control so they have higher satisfaction in their work?  Has it impacted the productivity or your workplace?

Ones Add Up

Howard Schultz stated this in his book Onward, “We thought in terms of millions of customers and thousands of stores instead of one customer, one partner, one cup of coffee at a time. With such a mind set many little things dangerously slipped by unnoticed or at least went unacknowledged. How could one imperfect cup of coffee, one unqualified manger, or one poorly located store matter when millions of cups of coffee were being served in thousands of stores? We forgot that ones add up!

Footnote: 65 billion cups of coffee are consumed annually in the United States.  Starbucks holds only 4% of that market.

Many of you are leading organizations that have a large amount of employees and in some cases your organizations serve thousands of customers a day from students at colleges or universities to police forces representing entire communities.  As leaders, do you believe that “one’s add up”?  If so,  can you share in your case how ones added up in a negative way or positive way and how you focus on the ones – also why is it important that organizations pay attention to the singleness of their product or consumer.

Self Improvement = Self Investment

UC Berkeley recently calculated that in 2000 the total amount of information produced world wide was the equivalent of 37,000 times as much information that is held in the Library of Congress and in 2003 that amount doubled.  By the way, that does not include that information from Facebook, Twitter and YouTube – Sometimes You Win, Sometimes You Learn by John Maxwell

As a leader, how do you keep up with the abundance of information that is now available to help you.  What habits have you created to help you stay up to date and informed?

I have heard that great leaders also have great systems to keep information – do you use a system and if so what is it?

“Enthusiasm is a Muscle”

To stay enthusiastic you have to find a way to tap back into the original desire that led you on the path to begin with. I caution people who look and think that it’s money.  In my case, this was not the case.  It’s always been about the work, period. As a leader do you agree that keeping your enthusiasm is important and if so how do you prepare daily to stay enthusiastic?  What tools, ideas, exercises, do you use to keep you at your best?

I am also interested to know how you keep your original desire front and centre as it is easy to be overrun with every day details and duties.   Also, what motivates you?  Is it the work and if so what is it about the work that gives you so much enthusiasm?

With more than $38 billion in annual revenues and $7.6 billion in operating income in 2010, with more than 28,000 hotel rooms in 34 hotels and 4 theme parks, over 200 restaurants and more than 10,000 people that are called cast members at Disney you would have to call this company a magical organization – but how do they do it?

According to the book “Be Our Guest” it is this simple – Exceeding expectations by attending to the details is how you can create practical magic for your customers.  Quality Service – Quality Services means exceeding your guests’ expectations by paying attention to every detail of the delivery of your products and services. It’s simple and less than astounding but the challenge is living up to the requirements of Quality Service – many companies can wow their customers on occasion but few are able to accomplish it daily.  What is the magic that you can use to commit to building an organization that will and can exceed expectations?

What amazes me is that Disney is able to engage 150,000 employees in a vision and commitment to deliver quality service every day. So, as a leader of an organization, company, or community, how have you been able to engage your people to believe in one vision? How did you share your vision and get your people to commit to the standards that you have set?

Do you believe that quality service can be a competitive edge for your organization? If so, what steps have you taken to train your people and how are you accountable to delivering Quality Services?
