Leaders and Public Speaking

Recently I was reading about Tony Hsieh the CEO of Zappos.com Inc. Tony was reflecting about his early days when media coverage was increasing and he started getting more requests to speak and tell the story about the success of Zappos. Tony shared that he was a nervous wreck as he had not done much public speaking in his career.  He could not sleep the night before his speech and he stated that he didn’t really enjoy the whole experience but knew it was important to tell the story about Zappos as he knew it would help build the brand.  Tony learned the art of “Flow” it’s a type of happiness in which someone looses all sense of time, self consciousness.  What Tony learned was that when you speak from passion, tell personal stories, and be real and true to yourself, your message will impact your audience. As a leader that has to make public presentations and speeches how do you find your own “flow”?  How do you build a message that will help tell the story of your brand or company or organization? Can you share how you build a message and what your overall goal is in doing public presentations? Tony shared that the frame for any speeches always included; passion for what you do, sharing personal stories and most importantly being real.  Is this the same approach you take?  What other action do you take to align your overall message to help advance your brand?
