Innovation the DARPA Way

Over the past 50 years the Pentagon’s(DARPA) has been able to produce a number of breakthroughs that include Global Positioning Satellites. With an annual budget of $3 billion, 100 temporary, technical project managers and about 120 support staff it is amazing the speed and effectiveness DARPA has been able to innovate. Their approach is to attract talented performers from a wide array of disciplines, organizations and backgrounds.  Then, keep them intensely focused, set a finite term for the project (up to 5 years). Finally, they staff it with people working under contracts that last only as long as they perform and contribute to the overall goal. This is not a lifetime career position.

This is an interesting way of staying innovative and it has had a great deal of success. How do YOU attract talent to be a part of your team to help with innovation?
