Media Kit for DAN CARTER

Author * National Speaker * Municipal Politician

Dan Carter has lived a life that could be best described as inspirational, meaningful and tragic. His life has been one of great courage and includes overcoming a 20-year addiction to drugs and alcohol that almost took his young life.  A veteran television host and producer of news and informational programming, Dan dedicated his life to becoming more knowledgeable about issues that face individuals each day.  As an author, Dan’s book, It’s the Right Time Now, provides a unique blend of reflection, inspiration, education and motivation. Dan is now a City and Regional Councillor for the City of Oshawa (in Ontario, Canada). He works full-time as a local politician and is honoured to be able to serve his community.

Dan is a sought-after speaker who has shared his message with corporations, churches, community agencies, service agencies and a multitude of charitable organizations.  He speaks across the country about mental health, addictions and suicide.  1 in 5 Canadians deal with mental health issues daily.  It is also estimated that as high as 4 million Canadians are dealing with an addiction and tragically 12 families per day are effected by suicide. Dan speaks from true life experience and strongly advocates to remove the stigma surrounding mental health issues that so often prevents people from seeking help.

Dan also does corporate leadership training which has been extremely well received. Dan will help corporate teams create a powerful vision while intensifying their collective energies. He reviews realistic and manageable strategies that emphasize leadership and inspire excellence and motivation towards shared and individual success.

“Dan Carter has lived a life that could be best described as inspirational, meaningful and tragic.

Dan has been recognized by the United Way, several Chambers of Commerce, Her Majesty the Queen and the current Chief of the Defence Staff of the Canadian Forces.  He was recently given a Rotarian honour as a Paul Harris Fellow. He has also been awarded with the Courage to Come Back Award from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.  One of his proudest moments was December 2009 when he carried the Olympic flame and lit the cauldron for the City of Oshawa!

“One day was all it took for Dan to begin rebuilding his life…

Dan Carter has achieved much success in his life, but his journey was turbulent. He battled addiction and depression for years before realizing he either had to change the current course of his life or face the consequences of abuse. One day was all it took for Dan to begin rebuilding his life. Today, almost twenty years later and twenty years sober, Dan is undeniable evidence of the power of now. He is living proof that change is possible and that the right time to be inspired, to be motivated and to act, is now. All we need is one day and the courage to deal with life on life’s terms.

Dan’s message is one of hope, motivation and possibility. Is this the day you decide to act? Dan believes it is the right time now and with his help and encouragement, so will you.

As a committed leader, Dan has founded several community projects that include:

  • The founder of the Isobel Carter Youth Fund, a foundation that awards educational grants to disadvantaged youth who display leadership and compassion to others
  • The Day of Hope and Leadership Professional Development Day
  • The founder of the Hope Centre of Learning (within the Oshawa Community Health Centre)
  •  The Carter Centre of Media and Cultural Studies

Dan is the past Chair of the Board of Ontario Shores Foundation for Mental Health. Dan’s leadership and contributions have been widely recognized within the broader community and he has received a number of honours and awards for his work, including Business Person of the Year Award from the Whitby Chamber of Commerce (2006) and the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce (2011), the CAMH Courage to Come Back Award and both the Queen’s Golden and Diamond Jubilee Medallions. Dan was also conferred with an honorary Doctor of Laws from the University Of Ontario Institute Of Technology.
